content(projects): swap event placeholders for real photos + copy cleanup
Replace event-placeholder.svg with real .webp photos across all 2025-2026 event/project pages (EN/MK/SI), updating OG/Twitter/JSON-LD image refs, inline article images, and content/events/*.md. Also Latinize EN/SI titles (e.g. "Kafanska večer") and drop empty "In numbers" TOC sections. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

1. Who can apply?

The scholarship is open to citizens of North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia.

Applicants must have permanent residence outside Slovenia and must not be Slovenian citizens or long-term residents of Slovenia. They must have completed, or be completing, their undergraduate degree at a higher-education institution in one of the eligible Western Balkan countries.

The scholarship is intended only for second-cycle master’s programmes. It is not available for undergraduate studies, doctoral studies, exchange programmes or integrated master’s programmes.

Applicants must also:

be younger than 28 on 1 October 2026;

have an undergraduate average grade of at least 8.0, after conversion to the Slovenian grading system;

2. Which study areas are eligible?

The scholarship is available only for master’s programmes classified in the following areas:

Natural sciences, mathematics and statistics

Information and communication technologies

The Scholarship Fund decides whether a particular programme belongs to an eligible category by checking Slovenia’s official higher-education records. Applicants should confirm their programme’s classification before applying.

The scholarship can be used at an accredited higher-education institution anywhere in Slovenia, not only at the University of Ljubljana.

3. What does the scholarship cover?

Successful applicants receive €800 per month, equivalent to €9,600 for one academic year. The scholarship covers 12 months and is generally transferred as one payment for the full academic year. It may continue for the minimum duration of the study programme, provided the student meets the conditions for progression.

The official call provides support specifically for living expenses. It does not state that tuition fees, accommodation, health insurance, travel, residence-permit costs or study materials are covered. Applicants should therefore check whether tuition applies and prepare a realistic budget.

The scholarship is paid into the student’s personal bank account, which must be opened with a bank in Slovenia or another country in the European Economic Area.

4. What are the main conditions?

Recipients must have student status and live in Slovenia from 1 October 2026 onward. The programme cannot be conducted entirely through distance learning or only through occasional consultations in Slovenia.

During the funded period, recipients generally cannot:

receive a Slovenian state or Zois scholarship;

receive another scholarship or financial support intended for studying in Slovenia;

be employed or self-employed in Slovenia or abroad;

be registered as unemployed;

serve as the manager of a company or director of a private institution.

Study exchanges abroad may be possible with the Scholarship Fund’s prior approval, but they cannot take place in the student’s country of origin.

Applicants may submit only one application for one study programme.

5. Residence and the required representative in Slovenia

By the application deadline, applicants must either have registered temporary residence in Slovenia or appoint a representative who legally resides in Slovenia.

The representative receives official correspondence, helps the applicant understand documents issued in Slovenian and represents them during the scholarship procedure. The official power-of-attorney form must be signed by both the applicant and the representative.

Applicants must also apply for a Slovenian temporary residence permit for study purposes before 1 October 2026. The application can be submitted at a Slovenian embassy or consulate abroad or at the competent administrative unit in Slovenia.

Candidates who do not yet live in Slovenia should find a reliable person with residence in Slovenia who is willing to act as their representative.

6. Which documents are required?

The application package includes an original, fully completed and handwritten signed application form, together with documentation proving that all conditions are met.

The main documents include:

The official application form

A completed power of attorney or proof of registered temporary residence in Slovenia

Proof of citizenship

Proof of permanent residence abroad

Proof that an application for a study residence permit has been submitted

Proof of enrolment and information about the study programme

A bachelor’s diploma or official proof of completion

An official transcript containing all undergraduate grades

An explanation of the grading scale when it differs from the Slovenian system

Documentation about any previous postgraduate enrolment, when applicable

Candidates who completed their undergraduate degree after 31 December 2025 must submit an updated transcript issued after 1 January 2026, showing their grades and the dates on which they were obtained.

Documents may be submitted in a foreign language using the Latin alphabet, but the Fund may request a certified translation into Slovenian. Documents written in Cyrillic should not be submitted without an appropriate official translation. Originals and certified copies submitted to the Fund may not be returned.

Applicants who wish to receive additional selection points for scientific publications or relevant work experience must submit the prescribed supporting documents. Publications must be properly registered and classified in COBISS, while work experience must be confirmed by the relevant employer.

7. How are candidates selected?

The minimum required undergraduate average is 8.0. If the total amount requested by eligible applicants exceeds the available funding, applications are ranked according to:

undergraduate academic performance;

scientific publications and conference participation;

relevant professional experience.

Academic performance can provide up to 40 points, while publications can provide up to 30 points. Relevant work experience from 2023, 2024 and 2025 may also be considered when connected to the applicant’s field of study and lasting at least six months.

The official call contains an apparent inconsistency in this section: the heading states that work experience is worth up to 20 points, while the displayed scoring table lists awards of 5 or 10 points. Applicants relying on these points should request clarification directly from the Scholarship Fund.

8. How and when do you apply?

The complete application must be submitted in physical form to:

Javni štipendijski, razvojni, invalidski in preživninski sklad Republike Slovenije Dunajska cesta 20 1000 Ljubljana Slovenia

The envelope must be marked:

“prijava na 380. javni razpis”

Applications can be delivered personally during the Fund’s business hours or sent by post. Applications sent by email are not accepted.

The deadline is Wednesday, 2 September 2026. When sent by registered post, the date of posting is considered the submission date. For ordinary mail or personal delivery, the application must be received by the Fund before the deadline.

Because the application requires documents from universities, public authorities, employers and potentially a certified translator, candidates should start preparing well in advance.

9. What happens after receiving the scholarship?

The Fund issues an official decision to every applicant. Successful candidates then sign a scholarship agreement that defines the payment schedule and their obligations.

Recipients must regularly progress to the next study year, complete the programme within the contractual period and submit proof of successful completion to the Fund. Failure to meet the scholarship conditions can end the scholarship relationship and may create repayment obligations, depending on the agreement and applicable scholarship rules.

For students from North Macedonia, this scholarship can provide significant support for living expenses during a master’s degree in Slovenia. However, it applies only to selected study areas, has strict residence and employment conditions and requires a detailed physical application.

Start by confirming that your programme is eligible, checking whether tuition applies, finding a representative in Slovenia when necessary and collecting the documents well before 2 September 2026.

Arriving at the end of your secondary education, with a modest eighteen years behind you, you have to decide where to continue your studies. Will you stay in Macedonia, or perhaps decide to go somewhere abroad (as I decided to continue my education in Slovenia)? Surely the same questions that troubled me are spinning in your head too: "How will I fit into a new environment when I do not know the language?"; "Will I manage to find friends?"; "What will I do without my closest people?".

I am here to tell you that what you are going through is completely normal, but that does not mean it should discourage you from taking your life into your own hands. I am not here to tell you what the situation in Macedonia is like or whether it is good to leave your home (that would be intruding on your privacy), but if you ask me, you deserve to see another system so that you can decide for yourself which one you prefer. For example, leaving home made me love our Skopje and our Macedonia so much more.

Let us return to the topic and hypothetically imagine that you have decided to study abroad. I will be honest and I will not lie to you: the first few months are the hardest. They are filled with many tears, with a feeling of loneliness, and nostalgia and melancholy will prevail within you. But as they say, after the rain comes the sun. Of course you can overcome these states. I would like to tell you that there is some formula you can apply to adapt to a new environment, but unfortunately that is not the case.

I can only tell you what helped me. I arrived in Maribor and felt lonely and sad. I simply did not know what to do with my emotions. I am not an artistic soul, but I began to pour my states and inner unrest into poetry. Those poems of mine helped me to face and accept my reality. I started to share them with my closest people and those around me, and that is how I realised that I am not alone (remember, you are never alone — there is always someone going through the same thing as you).

Of course, that was not enough. My everyday life was monotonous and consisted of going to lectures and studying. I missed those charming Skopje events. So I decided to get to know Maribor's culture and I found my own cultural corner. At those events I met my people (we all have our own type of people, and you will always find a place where you find your type) and many new artists I had never heard of. By meeting new people I also improved my Slovene, which I still do not speak clearly and grammatically correctly — but that is only motivation for me to improve it.

In my teenage life I was not a person who actively did sports. But out of hardship I even started exercising. I run and work out every day. I do not know why, but it gave me a different perspective on life and made me mentally stronger to cope with my loneliness. Evidently there was something to the words: "a healthy body, a healthy spirit."

There are many more little things that helped me start to feel at home in Maribor, but I still believe the most important thing is to stay persistent and brave. Do not give up at the first obstacle, because the world is much more beautiful when you look at it from the arduously-climbed mountain of challenges.

Banks may change their account packages, fees, age limits, digital-opening conditions, and required documents. Contact the selected bank before visiting a branch, especially if you are a foreign student with temporary residence.

Why a Slovenian bank account is useful

A Slovenian bank account is not always legally required for every student, but it makes everyday life much easier. It is commonly used for student-work payments, scholarships, rent, utility bills, local transfers, SEPA direct debits, and card payments. It also gives you access to Flik, which many students use to split rent, groceries, transport, and other shared expenses.

A foreign SEPA account may still work for some payments, but local employers, student services, landlords, and institutions often find a Slovenian account more practical. For most students who plan to live, work, and study in Slovenia for more than a short period, opening one is worth considering.

What you normally need

The exact list differs between banks, but an incoming student should normally prepare the following documents and information.

A valid passport. Bring the original document. The bank records your citizenship, passport number, issuing country, and expiry date.

A Slovenian tax number, or davčna številka. Foreign citizens obtain it from FURS by submitting form DR-02. The request can normally be submitted personally, by post, or through an authorised person. FURS states that the certificate is generally issued within eight days after receiving a complete request. More information is available on the official FURS page.

Proof of lawful stay and residence. Bring your temporary residence permit if it has already been issued. Depending on the bank and the stage of your move, it may also request proof of a submitted residence application, temporary-address registration, rental contract, or dormitory confirmation.

Proof of student status. For a student or youth package, bring a current certificate of enrolment, or potrdilo o vpisu. A student card or admission letter may also be useful, but the certificate of enrolment is normally the safest document.

Your permanent and temporary addresses. The bank may record both your permanent address in Macedonia and your current address in Slovenia. Bring official evidence where available.

Tax-residency information. The bank will ask in which country or countries you are resident for tax purposes and may request your tax number for each country. Having a Slovenian tax number does not automatically mean that you are a Slovenian tax resident. Contact FURS if you are unsure about your status.

A Slovenian phone number and email address. These are commonly used for mobile banking, security messages, card notifications, and Flik activation.

The bank may also ask how the account will be used and where incoming funds will come from. A student can normally explain that the account will be used for living expenses, rent, student-work income, scholarships, and transfers from family.

How to open the account

Obtain your Slovenian tax number first. This is one of the documents most frequently requested by banks.

Compare student and youth packages. Do not look only at the monthly fee. Check the age limit, ATM withdrawal fees, included transfers, debit-card costs, Flik availability, mobile-banking functions, and what happens after graduation or after you reach the package age limit.

Contact the branch before visiting. Explain that you are a citizen of North Macedonia, an international student, and a temporary resident in Slovenia. Ask for the exact document list. Online account opening is often limited to Slovenian citizens or permanent residents, so visiting a branch is usually the safer option for a newly arrived student.

Bring original documents and printed copies. A passport, tax-number certificate, residence permit, address evidence, and certificate of enrolment should cover most requests, but the bank may ask for additional information.

Complete the bank’s declarations. You will normally be asked about citizenship, tax residence, expected account activity, source of funds, and whether you are a politically exposed person.

Activate your services. Before leaving, ask when the debit card and PIN will arrive, how to activate mobile banking and Flik, which withdrawals are free, and how future document updates should be submitted.

Banks commonly considered by students

The options below are not ranked and should not be treated as formal recommendations. Packages change, so confirm the current conditions directly with the bank.

NLB offers the NLB Osnovni račun, currently promoted as free for young people up to the stated age limit. The published basic requirements include a valid identity document and Slovenian tax number, while proof of student status may be required for selected offers. Its services include NLB Klik, NLB Pay, Flik, and supported mobile wallets. See the NLB account page.

OTP banka offers Paket Vizija for young people under the published age limit. Its current information lists an identity document, Slovenian tax-number certificate, and proof of schooling or student status. The package includes access to mobile and online banking, Flik, and supported mobile wallets. See Paket Vizija.

Intesa Sanpaolo Bank offers a Youth Account or Youth Package for students and young people. A branch normally requires a valid identity document and tax number, while a foreign student should also bring residence, address, and enrolment evidence. App-based account opening has stricter eligibility conditions, so foreign students should contact a branch. See the Youth Account page.

UniCredit Bank Slovenia offers the Sproščeni Mladi package for young people and students under the published age limit. The bank lists a valid identity document and Slovenian tax number as basic requirements, but foreign customers may be asked for additional residence and address evidence. See the young customer package.

Banka Sparkasse offers the Udobni Študentski račun. Its published information lists an identity document, Slovenian tax number, and certificate of enrolment for the student account. See the account-opening requirements.

Delavska hranilnica offers the DH EYCA Mladostni paket for young people and students under its published conditions. A valid identity document, Slovenian tax number, and proof of student status are normally required. See the DH EYCA package.

If a bank does not approve a normal account, ask whether you qualify for an osnovni plačilni račun, or basic payment account. A person who legally resides in the European Union and does not already have a Slovenian transaction account may have the right to request this type of account. It covers essential services such as receiving money, withdrawals, card payments, transfers, direct debits, and standing orders. More information is available from Banka Slovenije.

Keep your information updated after opening the account

Opening the account is not the final administrative step. Banks are required to keep customer information current, and foreign students should report important changes without waiting for the bank to contact them.

Every time you renew your temporary residence permit, bring the new permit to the bank or ask how it should be submitted securely. This should normally be done each year, because the bank may need valid evidence after the previous document expires.

You should also notify the bank if your permanent or temporary address changes, if you receive a new passport, if your name or citizenship information changes, or if you change your phone number or email address. An outdated phone number can block authentication codes and security notifications.

Tax residency must also remain accurate. Inform the bank if you become a Slovenian tax resident, cease to be one, or remain tax resident in Macedonia. The bank may ask you to complete a new CRS self-certification. A Slovenian tax number and Slovenian tax residency are not the same thing, so consult FURS when your situation is unclear.

Flik and mobile banking

Flik is a Slovenian instant-payment service that allows users of participating banks to send and receive money using a phone number or email address. Payments usually arrive within seconds and work throughout the day, including weekends and public holidays.

Students commonly use Flik to split rent and utility costs, repay friends, share grocery expenses, collect money for an event, or request payment without entering an IBAN. The exact app depends on the bank. NLB uses NLB Pay, Sparkasse uses M.Stik, Delavska hranilnica uses DH Denarnik, while several banks support Flik Pay or integrate Flik into their own mobile-banking application. A list of participating banks is available on the official Flik website and through Bankart.

When comparing bank apps, check whether they support QR bill scanning, SEPA and instant payments, Flik, card freezing, card-limit changes, payment notifications, online-purchase confirmation, digital statements, and Apple Pay or Google Pay. Not every bank offers the same features or activates them in the same way for foreign customers.

Tips from MSOS students

Book an appointment and bring more documents than the minimum. A foreign-student account may take longer to process. Carry your passport, Slovenian and Macedonian tax numbers, residence permit, address evidence, certificate of enrolment, and Slovenian phone number.

Ask what happens when your student status ends. A free account may become paid after graduation, employment, loss of status, or reaching the package age limit. Ask whether the bank changes the package automatically and what the new monthly cost will be.

Compare ATM and transaction fees. A package with no monthly fee can still charge for withdrawals at other banks, foreign-card use, paper statements, international transfers, or services completed at a bank counter.

Use Flik for everyday shared expenses. It is often faster than cash and more convenient than entering an IBAN each time.

NLB Macedonia customers may have a useful benefit. NLB Banka in Macedonia states that its debit-card customers can withdraw euros without an NLB withdrawal commission at NLB Group ATMs in Slovenia. Use an ATM clearly marked as part of the NLB Group. Currency conversion may still apply if the Macedonian account is held in denars, so commission-free does not always mean cost-free. Check the current conditions on the NLB Banka Macedonia page.

Be careful with ATM conversion and security messages. When withdrawing with a foreign card, read the exchange-rate offer before accepting conversion. Never share your PIN, mobile-banking password, or one-time security code through an unexpected message or link.

Before visiting a bank, make sure you have a valid passport, Slovenian tax number, residence evidence, proof of address, certificate of enrolment, contact details, and information about your tax residency and expected account use.

Sources and further information

For account eligibility and the exact document list, contact the selected bank directly. For a Slovenian tax number or tax-residency questions, consult FURS. For rights relating to a basic payment account or complaints about financial services, consult Banka Slovenije. For residence documentation, contact the responsible upravna enota or the Slovenian Embassy in Skopje.

MSOS can explain the process and share student experience, but the bank makes the final decision about required documents, account eligibility, and package conditions.

Moving to Slovenia for your studies? You do not need to speak perfect Slovene before arriving, but learning the basics early will make university, administrative procedures and everyday life much easier.

For Macedonian speakers, Slovene can initially feel familiar because the languages share many words and grammatical features. However, pronunciation, cases, formal writing and the Slovene dual still require practice. The most effective approach is to combine free self-study, regular speaking and, when possible, a course offered by your university.

Course dates, prices and requirements may change. Always confirm the latest information directly with the provider before registering.

1. Set a clear language goal

Start by deciding why you need Slovene. Basic everyday communication may require only an A1 or A2 level, while some university programmes, professions or administrative procedures may require B1 or B2.

Always check the official requirements of your study programme. Some faculties require proof of Slovene before enrolment, while others allow international students to improve their language skills during their studies.

Do not pay for an examination only because it provides a certificate. First confirm which level, examination and issuing institution your faculty or the relevant Slovenian authority accepts.

2. Begin with a free online course

A practical first step is Slovene Learning Online, a free self-paced course developed by the Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language at the University of Ljubljana.

The platform covers basic vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. During your first weeks, focus on introductions, numbers, time, directions, accommodation, transport, food and phrases used at faculties and administrative offices.

Short, regular sessions are usually more effective than occasional long lessons. Try studying for around 20 minutes per day and learn complete phrases instead of isolated words. Repeating the recordings aloud will also help you become more comfortable with Slovene pronunciation.

3. Check the options at your university

University language courses are usually among the most affordable options and are often adapted to the needs of international students.

At the University of Ljubljana, Leto plus, or Year Plus, is available to eligible international students who are enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or master’s programme. It includes two Slovene courses with 60 hours of group work and 3 ECTS each. Under the current conditions, students who complete both courses and obtain at least 30 ECTS during their first year may qualify for a one-year extension of their student status.

Leto plus is not intended for exchange students or students enrolled in programmes that already require B2 Slovene before admission. Recognition of the courses as electives depends on the individual faculty. Students who are not eligible can also check the Centre’s separate Slovene courses for students.

The University of Maribor offers a free online beginner course through Moodle. The University of Primorska offers free Slovene courses from A1 to B1 for enrolled international students and staff, while the University of Nova Gorica offers courses from A1 to B2 and a Leto PLUS option for eligible first-year international students.

4. Learn Slovene before moving to Slovenia

Starting while you are still in North Macedonia can make your first months in Slovenia significantly easier.

The Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje has offered an A1 lifelong-learning programme in Slovene. The published programme includes 48 teaching hours over approximately three months, usually with classes twice per week. Current dates, format and fees should be checked directly with the Faculty.

Institution and contact

Location: Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski”, Bul. “Krste Misirkov” b.b., Skopje Department/contact person: Department of Slavic Studies, Prof. Dr. Lidija Arizankovska General contact provided for the Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language: admin@centerslo.net

Private language schools and education centres in North Macedonia and Slovenia also provide online and in-person Slovene courses. These can be useful for students who prefer structured lessons, regular speaking practice or preparation for a specific CEFR level.

Before registering, compare the total number of teaching hours, group size, teacher qualifications, course format and whether the programme prepares students for a recognised level or examination. Prices and schedules vary, so always confirm the latest information directly with the provider.

5. Understand the difference between a course and an official examination

Completing a language course is not automatically the same as receiving a publicly recognised certificate.

A Slovene language examination can be taken in North Macedonia at the Department of Slavic Studies of the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje. According to the information provided for this article, the examination is connected with the Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language. Because arrangements and recognition rules can change, verify this directly with the institutions involved and ask your Slovenian faculty, employer or administrative authority to confirm in writing whether the resulting certificate will be accepted for your specific purpose.

Official Slovene examinations are also available through the Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language and its recognised providers in Slovenia. The required level and accepted certificate depend on the institution or procedure for which you need proof of language knowledge.

6. Follow a realistic learning plan

Before arriving, complete the introductory lessons on slonline.si and learn vocabulary related to accommodation, transport, studies and administrative procedures.

After arriving, enrol in the Slovene course offered by your university and use the language in everyday situations. Start with greetings, ordering food, asking for directions and speaking with classmates. Even when someone replies in English, continue trying to use simple Slovene phrases.

By the end of your first semester, aim to understand basic announcements, write simple emails and explain practical problems. It is also useful to create a separate vocabulary list for terminology connected to your study programme.

For most Macedonian students, the most practical route is to begin with slonline.si, check whether their university offers a free course or Leto plus, use a structured course in North Macedonia when they need additional support, and pay for an examination only after confirming which certificate is accepted.

You do not need to know everything before arriving. A basic foundation, regular practice and the confidence to speak will already make your transition to student life in Slovenia much easier.

The programme is in English and covers practical topics such as residence permits, health insurance, accommodation, student meals, public transport, Year Plus, tutoring, career services, and extracurricular activities. Registration is mandatory.

Bachelor’s and master’s students should also check the website and email of their own faculty. Many UL faculties organise separate first-year welcomes, programme introductions, tutor meetings, or Erasmus sessions around the end of September and the first day of classes. These faculty events may contain the most important information about timetables, student systems, course selection, and the physical location of classes.

The University of Maribor’s central Orientation Week for Freshmen will take place from 21 to 25 September 2026. It includes shared online presentations about university IT services, student life, libraries, career support, international opportunities, and support for foreign degree students.

The university also publishes separate programmes for its faculties. Some faculties organise preparatory courses, campus tours, tutor meetings, and official receptions on different dates, often between 21 September and 1 October. New master’s students should therefore check whether their faculty has a separate introduction for their programme.

Erasmus students receive information from the UM International Relations Office and their faculty coordinators. The autumn 2026 Erasmus welcome reception had not yet been published when this article was checked, so incoming exchange students should follow the official Erasmus+ news page and their email.

The programme includes practical information about life on the Slovenian coast, the university, residence documents, student benefits, mobility opportunities, and a free introductory Slovenian course.

The main in-person Orientation Days will take place from 28 to 30 September 2026.
Students who are still finalising their study choice can also attend UNG’s online international Info Day on 10 September 2026 at 14:00, but this is an admissions information event rather than the final welcome programme for enrolled students.

Starting university in another country is easier when you know where to go, who to ask, and what happens during the first days. Slovenia’s main universities organise welcome and orientation activities for new students, but the structure differs.
1. Start with your university

Before searching private listings, check the accommodation information published by your university. University pages explain whether international students can apply for a dormitory, which student residences are available, and who to contact for help.

The University of Ljubljana generally directs international degree students toward private accommodation and recommends the free room agency m2, as well as its HousingAnywhere rental platform. The University of Maribor offers limited dormitory places and also publishes private and student-residence options. The University of Primorska has specific calls for some international degree students, while exchange students are usually directed toward private housing. The University of Nova Gorica lists housing options across Nova Gorica, Vipava, Ajdovščina, Postojna, and nearby Gorizia, and its student office also helps connect students with accommodation providers.

Official university pages:

University of Nova Gorica student guide

Do not assume that a dormitory place is guaranteed. Eligibility and availability vary, and places can fill quickly.

2. Use established rental and student-housing websites

Several websites are useful for finding rooms, roommates, studios, and apartments across Slovenia.

Nepremicnine.net is one of the largest Slovenian property portals. It is useful for full apartments and rooms, and it allows you to filter by city, size, price, and property type.

Nepremicnine.net

Bolha has a large property section with private listings from across Slovenia. Read each advertisement carefully because both agencies and private landlords publish there.

Bolha real estate

Mojcimer focuses on student rooms, shared apartments, and finding roommates. It is especially useful when you are open to sharing accommodation.

Mojcimer

m2 is a free room-rental service recommended by the University of Ljubljana. It can help students search for private accommodation and understand common rental questions.

m2 room agency

Kamrica is particularly useful for accommodation in Maribor and includes rooms, beds, and student apartments.

Kamrica

HousingAnywhere is an international rental platform often used by incoming and exchange students. It can be useful for arranging accommodation before arrival, but always check platform fees, cancellation rules, and what is included in the price.

HousingAnywhere

3. Facebook groups and community channels

Facebook groups and Marketplace can help you find new listings quickly, especially from students looking for roommates or leaving their room before the end of a contract.

Useful search terms include:

Stanovanja Ljubljana

Sobe Ljubljana

Stanovanja Maribor

Študentske sobe Maribor

Oddaja in najem stanovanj Koper

Stanovanja Obala

Oddaja in najem stanovanj Nova Gorica

Apartments and rooms for rent in Ljubljana

Erasmus accommodation Ljubljana, Maribor, or Koper

You can also check Facebook Marketplace and university or Erasmus student groups.

Treat social-media listings with extra caution. The University of Primorska specifically warns that Facebook accommodation groups may not always be reliable. A profile, photograph, or friendly conversation does not prove that the person owns the property or has the right to rent it.

Ask local student organisations, ESN, classmates, or MSOS members whether they recognise the landlord, address, or listing before paying anything.

4. What to check before paying or signing

A legitimate offer should clearly explain the monthly rent, deposit, utilities, duration of the rental, notice period, and what furniture or equipment is included. Ask whether electricity, heating, water, internet, building costs, and cleaning are included or paid separately.

Before transferring money, verify the exact address and request a live viewing, video call, or visit by someone you trust. Confirm the landlord’s identity and ask for a written rental contract. The contract should identify the landlord and tenant, describe the room or apartment, state the rent and deposit, list additional costs, define the rental period, and explain the termination conditions.

Be careful when:

the price is much lower than similar listings

the landlord refuses a viewing or video call

you are pressured to pay immediately

payment is requested through an unusual transfer method

the landlord refuses to provide a contract

the person says they are abroad and cannot prove ownership

the photographs or description appear copied from another listing

the landlord refuses temporary-address registration

Do not send a passport scan to an unknown person before verifying the offer. When a copy is genuinely needed, ask why and how it will be stored.

5. Why the contract and address matter for residence procedures

Accommodation is not only about having a place to sleep. Your address may also be needed for immigration and administrative procedures.

Depending on your entry and application route, an embassy or authority may request proof of accommodation. After receiving a temporary residence permit, foreigners must register their temporary address in Slovenia within the applicable deadline. Official guidance currently states that the temporary residence should generally be registered within eight days after the residence permit is delivered.

Before signing, ask the landlord directly:

Will you provide a rental contract or owner’s statement and allow me to register my temporary residence at this address?

Avoid accommodation where the landlord refuses prijava začasnega prebivališča. Even if the room looks good, this can create serious problems with residence registration, official mail, banking, tax procedures, and other student administration.

Keep copies of the signed rental contract, proof of deposit and rent payments, any landlord statement, the temporary-address registration confirmation, photographs of the room at move-in, and an inventory of furniture and existing damage.

6. Need more help?

For detailed information about dormitory eligibility, private rental contracts, temporary-address registration, city differences, and accommodation scams, read the MSOS Student Welcome Guide.

Read more on the accommodation page of the Student Welcome Guide.

MSOS can share student experience and help you understand where to look, but the university, landlord, upravna enota, or other responsible institution must confirm your individual administrative requirements.

Check current availability Rental listings change daily, while university housing rules differ by city, university, study level, and student status. Always confirm the current conditions directly with the university, accommodation provider, or landlord.

Finding accommodation is often one of the most stressful parts of moving to Slovenia, especially in Ljubljana and on the coast. The best approach is to begin early, check several sources at the same time, and never send money before confirming who is renting the property and whether you will receive a proper contract.
