Exam registration is your responsibility

Learn how to:

University of Primorska shows how detailed rules can be: registration several days before the exam, withdrawal before a separate deadline, a waiting period after a late withdrawal, absence, or failed attempt, limits on attempts, and fees for later or commission attempts. These exact numbers are not national rules; read your faculty’s assessment regulation and portal instructions.

Referat and university systems

The faculty student office (referat) handles administrative study questions. A useful email includes your name, student or application number, programme, year, a clear question, the relevant deadline, and an attachment where necessary. During the first week, learn the student portal, course and exam registration systems, the e-classroom, official email, eduroam, library search and repository, and any digital student identity.

Learning Slovenian

A programme advertised in English may still use Slovenian for administration, placements, local professional settings, some electives, and everyday life. Useful routes include university language courses, Leto plus for eligible first-year international students at University of Ljubljana, the Center za slovenščino kot drugi in tuji jezik, free self-study through Slonline, and faculty conversation groups. Some programmes require B2 Slovenian for admission, so check the annual call before applying.

Tutoring, representation, and extracurricular ECTS

A tutor can help with course selection, systems, and the first semester. The student council (študentski svet) represents student views inside the university and appoints students to bodies that may decide on academic matters such as exceptional progression. Some universities formally credit selected extracurricular activities: COD at University of Ljubljana, KOOD at University of Maribor, and selected University of Primorska activities including sport and alliance programmes. Check enrolment periods, available places, and whether the activity counts inside or outside the programme’s normal ECTS structure.

Repeat, programme change, and inactive study

Before withdrawing:

Students commonly have one major repeat or programme-change opportunity at a study level, but the exact legal and institutional effect depends on the student’s history and current rules. Before using it, ask the referat for a written record of previous enrolments, repeated years, programme changes, remaining rights, and tuition and status consequences.

Losing status and exceptional progression

Losing status

Loss of student status may affect residence, meals, transport, student work, insurance, accommodation, and a scholarship, so contact the faculty and administrative unit before the change becomes final. Universities may allow exceptional progression for documented reasons such as longer illness, parenthood, serious social circumstances, recognised special needs, high-level sport or culture, or significant university participation; the relevant committee decides, so submit evidence before the faculty deadline.

Begin research before the student permit expires.

A graduate who completed eligible higher education in Slovenia within the relevant period can apply for the job-seeking or self-employment-search permit. It is issued for a maximum of nine months, is not renewable, and is for searching only, not regular employment. Apply before the current residence basis expires, and change to an appropriate work or self-employment permit once the next basis is secured. If the final completion certificate is delayed, ask the upravna enota whether it will accept the application and set a later deadline for the missing evidence.

Who can work

Student work and regular employment are different

A foreign student with valid student status may use student-work services when the applicable conditions are met.

A Macedonian student with valid student status can work through a student service using a napotnica. Prepare a Slovenian tax number, EMŠO, a personal bank account in your own name, an identity document, and student status visible to the service.

Before the first job

A standard employment contract is a different legal route. It generally requires changing to an appropriate work and residence basis, such as an enotno dovoljenje. Do not start regular employment only because student work was allowed.

Prepare:

Napotnica

The napotnica is the legal basis for student work and must be issued before the work begins. It can be electronic and replaces a separate employment contract for this temporary and occasional work. Keep a copy and confirm the employer, type of work, hourly rate, start date, and validity. Work without a valid napotnica is undeclared work.

Minimum rate and deductions

From 5 February 2026, the minimum gross hourly rate is €8.98, and the reference resident net rate after the standard pension contribution is €7.73. A tax non-resident may initially have a 13.95% pension and disability contribution and a 22.5% income-tax advance. The exact net amount depends on tax residence, treaty relief, payment size, and approved claims.

Treaty relief for Macedonian tax residents

Slovenia has a double-taxation treaty with North Macedonia. A qualifying student may use KIDO 4 before payment to request treaty relief and KIDO 12 after withholding to request a refund. FURS requires supporting evidence, and the current rules, thresholds, and personal allowance must be checked for the payment year.

Working conditions and red flags

Agree in writing on the gross hourly rate, schedule, paid break, payment date, reimbursements, safety training, and who records hours. The employer must keep records of actual working time. General working-time protections, rest rules, health and safety, and special protections for workers under 18 apply. Do not accept unpaid trial work, passport retention, false hour records, cash-only payment, or hazardous work without training.

From 5 February 2026, the published minimum gross hourly rate for student work is €8.98.

Celje has no single student-life portal equivalent to the four main universities. Build from the specific faculty or independent institution, its referat and career contact, Nomago city transport, rail connections, the local health centre, Klub študentov občine Celje and other verified local clubs, and local libraries and accommodation sources. For all smaller centres, check where teaching actually happens: University of Maribor and other institutions operate programmes outside their main city, so housing and transport should follow the physical teaching location.

A practical rule for asking for help

Do not wait until one problem affects five systems. An unpaid rent dispute can become an address problem, an address problem can delay residence correspondence, a residence delay can affect travel, and loss of status can affect meals, transport, work, insurance, and housing. Contact the responsible institution early and keep written records.
